Tips for Making a Great Paper Collage

Collage is a work of formal art, mainly in the visual arts, made from an assembly of different forms, thus creating a new whole. A collage may contain newspaper clippings, ribbons, bits of colored or hand-made papers, portions of other artwork or texts, photographs and other found objects, glued to a piece of paper or canvas.

The first step is learning to collect and create the paper collage. Choose an image or design that you would like to use as the base of your mosaic. you can also venture out and create a non-traditional collage using pieces of yarn or any other small objects you can adhere to a sturdy background. A collage can be abstract shapes or soft, impression of a scene, animal, or person. You will need a scissors, a craft knife and a ruler.

You will also need some wood glue or any other paper glue and, most importantly, a large piece of board or masonite, about half a metere square, on which to work. Cut your selected paper in strips, and then cut the strips into squares. 3/4 inch squares are good for beginners. Allow a bit of white space to show through, as that will generate the mosaic effect. You can have folders for different colored papers – these can differ in texture and density.

If your background is light, go over the outlines of the coloring book image with a pencil.

If your background is dark, use chalk instead of pencil. Use old letters, magazines, gift bags, tissue paper to create unique mosaics. The color you choose will help to integrate the different aspects and textures in your collage. Use the mosaic art style to create gifts such as a picture frame or canister to hold pencils. Once you have all your pics in place.

If you like you can cut each letter out seperately, or you may decide to cut out words and paste them together. Use different sizes, shapes and colors because they look great all mixed up. To make sure you are directly connected to your work of art, comprise a photograph of yourself on the collage or sign your name on it.

Some art authorities argue that collage, correctly speaking, did not emerge until after 1900, in conjunction with the early stages of modernism. Have fun with creating collages. They are a magnificent tool to support you in creating the idea for the life you want to live.

Wood Carving Techniques – The Art of Chiseling

Wood carving or sculpting is not just a simple thing to do. It requires special skills.

wood_carving

Wood carving is a form of working wood by means of a cutting tool in one hand or a chisel by two hands or with one hand on a chisel and one hand on a mallet, resulting in a wooden figure or figurine, or in the sculptural ornamentation of a wooden object. The choice of wood material to be used is also very important. Normally, hard wood is not an option in doing this art piece.

Probably the two most common woods used for carving are Basswood and Tupelo, both are hardwoods that are relatively easy to work with. Chestnut, Butternut, Oak, American walnut, mahogany and teak are also very good woods; while for fine work Italian walnut, sycamore maple, apple, pear, box or plum, are usually chosen.

Basswood is by far the most popular wood used in carving. It is relatively soft. It is easy to work with hand tools. It is white in color with fairly close grain pattern.

Cottonwood is a regional favorite wood for carving. It is softwood with a straight grain.

There are several ways on how to sculpt an image. Many of my carvings show animals within environment, the environment abstracted in the unique nature of wood. Shavings of wood may be removed by pushing the edge of this tool, called a chisel, against the block, at the same time sliding it laterally. You can also apply your carving skills on doors.
As carving itself is an art, those who are into it must be so imaginative and need to have overflowing ideas to create distinctive designs.

The fibrovascular structure of wood brings about certain conditions that must be taken into account by the carver. Wooden Christmas decorations and chess pieces are two other popular ideas for wood carving.

Wood carving is a hobby that inspires each and every person’s individuality and is a wonderful hobby for anyone.
