UC Berkeley new art museum design unveiled

UC Berkeley has unveiled the design for a structure that will transform an abandoned printing plant into the new Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archives. The structure is scheduled to open in late 2015. The project, designed by the renowned New York City-based firm of Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R), will unite a repurposed former UC Berkeley printing plant at 2120 Oxford Street with a new structure.

Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAM/PFA) is associated with the University of California, Berkeley in Berkeley, California. The director is Lawrence Rinder, who was appointed in 2008.

The new structure, extending between the corner of Oxford and Addison Streets and the museum’s Center Street facade, includes the 230-seat PFA Theater, Library and Film Study Center, special event space, collection study area, café, and nonpublic areas.

The facility would be smaller than the institution’s current home while adding one-third more wall space to display artwork.

Architect Charles Renfro said:”Every part of the facade has some special moment given over to the public.”

The museum has been seeking a new home since 1997, when the current Mario Ciampi-designed building was found seismically unsafe.
